The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Scheme run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. It allows students at Graduate and Post Graduate level in colleges and universities across India, to participate in different government-led community service activities and programmes. The purpose of NSS is to enable students to have hands-on experience in community service. Since the NSS was founded in 1969, the number of students has grown from 40,000 to over 3.8 million. As of March 31, 2018, students from various universities, colleges, and institutions of higher learning had volunteered to participate in various community service programmes.

The NSS ZHDC has been working in line with the Central NSS scheme, to provide students with a strong sense of direction and to educate them about their society and surroundings. The goal of the NSS Unit is to prepare students to serve their communities and to inculcate in them the feeling before self.
